From the Editor
Happy New Year to our readers! This Winter edition of the ALS Newsletter
finalizes another year of keeping our readers informed. In this edition
of the ALS Newsletter, Dr. Serge Przedborski our Research Director provides
an update on further investigations into the cell death process involved
in ALS and Belinda Cupid from the International Alliance for Motor Neuron
Diseases shares her summary of the international ALS/MND meeting in Milan
this past November.
Both articles continue to
demonstrate the efforts toward finding a cure for ALS, as well as how
to manage the disease. The International meeting summary may help many
of our readers to feel the reality of collaboration in ALS as it spans
not only disciplines, but institutions, states and continents. Ms.
Cupid’s article references not only the positive
experiences in ALS advances but also the challenges we continue to face
as a community committed to the cause.
The ALS Research Center at Columbia University Medical Center was well
represented at the Milan meeting. Clinicians from our Center presented
on some of our current research projects totaling 5 lectures during the
3-day conference. Future editions will share more of those findings with
our readers. Until then, everyone at the Center sends you and yours a
wonderful 2004!
Listening is the art by which we use empathy to reach across the space
between us. Passive attention does not work.
